Designing Biology talk, 31 oct 2013, rca

  • amy congdon - contemporary futures for biology and textiles, growing structures over scaffolds, inspired to see how stitching inspired from snowflake and natural patterns is aesthetic and used in medicine for sutures
  • daisy ginsberg - e.chromi / taxonomies for synthetic biologies, working with scientists. science funding. patent applications for slugs that are designed in a specific way and then "rewilded" - rewilding - putting something back into the wild when it has never been from the wild but its also an animal that is totally designed - her debate with an ecologist about how these slugs were made to be non biodegradable because she thought they should exist in their own ecosystem but then... its an ongoing debate / synthetic aesthetics - how can we design nature, and how can we design nature well? / biological privacy? human cheese made from cells from people, similar to how limburger cheese smells like feet cos it is from the same baterial from feet // what i understood from her work is that her idea of writing these fictions is not that they will come true but they point towards the direction we should explore in the future? she was frustrated when scientists really wanted to make her work a reality in large scale production.
  • charlotte jarvis - ergo sum, stem cell, donation of blood urine and skin (adult cells) - to make immortal cells / heart cells which are replicated from adult cells, that are beating outside of the body which it has never been within but is also a part of her // i realized that my initial reaction is that i find her work a little narcissistic - her cells made immortal (stem cell) and staring at her face in the mirror of the altar of biology - all very interesting work but still i find it hard to stare it in the face in that personal sort of way (problematic? why do i feel this way?)
  • raphael kim - drug discovery and development timeline, protein folding, bacterial money and financial models, architectural biology
  • damien palin - biomineralisation (lost connection)
  • james field - synthetic biologist from imperial college - iGem, project auxin - imperial is interested to collaborate / koby barhad - buying a hair from elvis, sequencing the dna, putting it into a mouse "all that i am" 2012 / blighted by kenning 2012 an apple that is sequenced with something else / millie clive-smith, cross wired iii 2013 / protein cage + engineering nanostructures, terminal extensions, targeting species and cargo molecules, substituition / targeted therapy for cancer cells
