In Lefebvre’s Production of Space (1974), space is defined as a complex social product where the social production of meaning affects our spatial practices and perceptions. Soja (1996) can also be said to extend Lefebvre’s ideas of the production of space by trying to define a triadic model of space.

First Space - Physical space (eg a particular geographical location) Second Space - Representation of Space (Virtual space, spatial practice, spatial metaphor, eg a space developed by an architect enacting various systems of signs) Third Space - Representational space (Lived social space, eg partially unknown as to how people understand or misunderstand a space)
