The separation of charges causes a potential difference across the material. The magnitude of the thermoelectric effect depends on the material. Semiconductors can be doped to have electron mobility or hole mobility (this is n- and p-doping, respectively). This makes sure that either negative or positive charge carriers primarily diffuse.

- Panasonic has developed a revolutionary hot water pipe that can actually turn the heat into usable electricity, as long as there's also a source of cold water. However, in factories where hot water is created as a waste product, or areas where hot geothermal springs are easily accessible, it could be a fantastic source of nearly free energy.
