The log encoding places shadows, midtones and highlights at different (often higher) code values than the sRGB encoding. A log encoded image shown on an sRGB encoded display without re-encoding. won’t match how it’s supposed to look, and can look washed out. The re-encoding converts the log code values to the corresponding sRGB values.
