  • Google: No competitors (no adwords). Small percentage of people in China use Google, and these are largely the higher educated/English speaking professionals.
  • Baidu: Fierce competition. In the current and rather archaic Baidu PPC system, price depends on keyword and position desired, each individual keyword has to be bought per year and cannot be really changed/managed and position may also be pushed down if more people decide to purchase the keyword. In some cases paid adverts can even be mixed into seamlessly with organic search (with the disclaimer that its advertising at the end of the URL, like Google's "Cached" option).
  • Purchasing ads on Baidu are almost impossible if one is physically in the UK.
    • Requires payment from specific local banks in China (International credit cards are rejected due to high amounts of credit fraud in china), requires physical mailed proof of bank statements (or for them to be personally delivered by hand to Baidu's offices).
    • PPC account managers are generally advised to contact Baidu directly and to contact/meet up with Baidu staff if they actually want to have any real control over their accounts.
    • Ad approval subject to Baidu’s requirements (has to load fast in China, should be in Chinese, etc)

But the value in Baidu Zhidao is that it’s one of the best forum for finding out about current public sentiment regarding issues. And the outlook for studying in England is generally very favourable now.
